Super Chevy Show Baton Rouge - True Street Blasts
Southern hospitality is alive and well in Louisiana. It was Friday night and Jim Campisano and my self found ourselves enjoying warm fires and warmer food with new found friends. By the way the guy on the left sucking his gut in for the photo, that's Jim Campisano.
The next seven photos are all of true street vehicles, this shot is just a portion of the vehicles making their parade lap down the track. Obviously we can't show all thirty vehicles to page space, but we will try.
...and older Vettes alike slugged it out in the true street class.
Even this odd rod RX-7 strutted its tail feathers in the True Street competition. Sadly he was packing lust a little too much punch and splintered his drive at the start of one of his runs. Better next time.

And these truck owners were not shy when it came to mashing the loud pedal and setting rubber on fire.
And the crowd goes wild! There was no room in the stands and it didn't seem to matter much.
Enthusiastic crowds lined the fences on both sides of the track watching the hot cars run.
Bigger is better. One thing that was very noticeable at this show was the amount of full sized Chevrolets. (Which if you ask me are the best things on four wheels) Impalas, Belair's, Biscayne's, of all shapes sizes and model years were on display at the show. Is this a new trend? Have most folk given up on owning an outrageously priced Camaro, Nova or Chevelle, and in turn have sought out the plus sized models?
This Biscayne was so bad it should be in detention! Yet another fine display of a plus sized panty raider. Dig the wheels and dig the stance.
Speaking of plus sized vehicles that weekend their were four 1958 Chevrolets. Were lucky to see that many in an entire year at the Super Chevy Shows.
I just loved one, A Parkwood wagon painted up in Olive drag. On the side of the door it reads "Area 51 Alien Retrieval". Who knows what type of top secret antics go on in the back seat of that stabin' cabin on wheels.
From Olive Drab to a full set of red flames, another magnificent Chevrolet wagon rolling like a bat out of...well, you know.
I have chest pains every time I look at this photo.
This third gen Camaro hung a perfect 10 when it launched on the green.
Red as he is known, had a super cool convertible '92 Camaro and took home an award for best in his class. Come to think of it he had the only 3rd gen on the show car side. Dig the chromed IROC wheels.
It seemed there were quite a few vehicles with an LS1 or an LS2 neatly tucked away in the engine bay. This '68 Camaro was no exception.
He was proudly displaying his Editors Choice Top 10 Award the very next day.

There was not an empty seat in the house, especially when the Nitro coupes ran and the jet car.

Perhaps one of our youngest drivers that received at top 10 editors choice drag award went to Jonah Begnaud and his 1969 388 Camaro from Cecelia, Louisiana. Raise em' right and they will never turn towards the rice burners.
David Stell Jr. from Montz, Louisiana took home an editors choice award. We liked the burnout and the color purple, how could you not?
Yes, that sweet inflatable gal named Poly Urethane accompanies Chad Daigre down the drag strip in 454 powered 1983 Camaro with a ' 92 Camaro front end. Chad was excited when we gave him and Poly and editors choice award he just had to give her a kiss.
Bear Carroll, yeah that his real name, was consistently inconsistent 496 1968 Camaro. We thought the ol' grizzly was pretty cool so earned himself an award.
Dig this beautiful little 1970 Opal. Craig Chatelain was running a 383 in this fly weight vehicle.
Speaking of fly-weight vehicles this has got to be the prettiest '72 Vega we have seen, so naturally Kevin Sims took an award home that day.
Future drag racer Dale Kirby took home a drag race award for his '67 Camaro, of course he let his dad Chad Kirby hold the plaque while we took the photo.
It looks like a show car doesn't it? That's what we told Kelly Laughlin when we gave him an award. His beautiful 1970 Chevelle was running a 540 big block on pump gas, and he races it. That's the kind of guy we like.
Kenny Doughty winner of the Jegs Bracket Two battle took home this ginormous trophy and some loot to boot. Where does one display such a large trophy? Will it fit on the fireplace mantel?
In the DOT class Andre Miller ran a 12.34 @ 107.33 in his pick em' truck not bad for a hay hauler. He also did some amazing burnouts in the True Street competition.
The second place winner in the DOT class went to Jimmy Rushing. I like the DOT class, these are the cars you will see driving the streets of America and making passes at the local track. The best of both worlds.
What, what, what! A Porsche with a Chevrolet engine? Yes it's true.
Hot boiled Crawfish at a Super Chevy show? Sign us up. Jim Campisano and I put down a bag of these tasty little creatures. Only in Louisiana.
The decisive moment captured in digital glory. The racing went on well into the night. Cajun Crawfish, cold beverages and racing, what else would you do at night?
You have to love this sign. It reads: WARNING drag racing is hazardous. Injury is possible to spectators in all areas of racetrack. Promoters and track owners assume no liability for no injuries. You attend at your own risk. In this sue happy world I guess you have to put signs up like this.
A coffin carrying nitro coupe Cadillac. If you are going to check out, you might as well go out in style in a ride like this.
