Super Chevy In Columbus--A Different World

Last year in September we were not even sure we could get a plane to Columbus. When we did, it was almost deserted and very tense. This year, we're used to security checks, no nail clippers, and getting our luggage tossed. Still, we've got a year under our belt, life goes on, especially Super Chevy Shows, and we're happy to be here.

A major attraction for this year's Columbus Super Chevy Show was the benefit auction held in the show tent on Saturday afternoon following the award ceremony. Held to provide much needed assistance to the family of Jet Car driver Jerry Gannon, who we lost in a tragic accident this year at Atlanta Dragway, it brought together show participants, racers, and Manufacturer's Midway folks to bid on an extraordinary collection of unique and valuable items from the world of motorsports (see Bow-Tie Briefs for more details). Of course, what would Columbus be without a record turnout of rabid racers? Ohio has a rich tradition of great drag racers, and whenever we have a Super Chevy Show in the Buckeye State, they come to run by the hundreds. Rain, sleet, or mud doesn't chase them away because they know that if you don't like the weather, stick around-it'll change in 15 minutes. Fortunately, it did and even hard rain could only delay the races, not cancel them. We'll finish Nitro Coupes in Houston and everybody else split the purse.

Early Chevy street rods are hitting the show scene regularly, and we love it. Wayne Bishop from Findlay, OH, rolled in with his '34 Chevy and rolled out with the Street Rodder magazine Outstanding Street Rod award.

How often do we find two ultra-cool '62 wagons at a Super Chevy Show, both owned by teenagers? Victor Ramey of Columbus, OH (left), was aided by the Make-A-Wish foundation in completing his wagon after he purchased it and became seriously ill. He and his '62 are back on their feet. Jason Pilkenton of Germantown, OH, drives his very well-done nitrous-equipped hauler to high school. Both of these young Chevy fans took home Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car awards.
