With the 2018 NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, going full steam ahead we ventured out to the autocross, or as the NSRA calls it, StreetKhana, to hang out with those who do car shows from the front seat of their car instead of the canvass-backed chair they hauled in their trunk.
This is the third year that the NSRA brought in The Autocross Guys to design the course and keep track of hundreds of lap times in the north end of the Kentucky Exposition Center’s massive parking lot. There is no cost for those wanting to take their car around the somewhat tight and technical course—just a quick tech check ensuring your lug nuts are tight and the battery is tied down. Easy as that.
Being this is the largest event on the NSRA’s show schedule, the large concentration of vintage Camaros, Novas, Chevelles, trucks, and Corvettes that turned up to take laps is high, yet the wait between runs goes pretty quickly so everyone gets plenty of seat time on the course.
BFGoodrich sponsors the autocross, in which people watching from the sidelines are encouraged to sign a waiver and hop in the passenger seat of one of the many dedicated ride-along cars for a hot lap with one of the many professional drivers on hand as they wheel their 600-plus horsepower muscle cars through a sea of orange cones.
The NSRA StreetKhana is a great way to make your visit to the car show a little more exciting and fun. Just be careful, as a few laps on an autocross has been known to be a gateway drug to a lifetime addiction of buying better performing suspension components and fatter tires for your classic ride.
