If you are into NHRA drag racing and happen to be a Chevy enthusiast, then times are good in your world; especially in the Pro Stock, Super Stock, and Stock categories. Of the 13 Pro Stock cars competing in the 2017 NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas (just outside of Houston), 10 were Chevrolet Camaros. In fact, this might now be Bo Butner’s favorite track as he was able to rally his Camaro past Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the final round to grab his first-ever Pro Stock event victory.
The track’s first NHRA national event took place in the fall 1988 and was soon established as the quickest track with NHRA’s first Top Fuel dragster 4-second pass. The track has hosted numerous record runs over the years, including the first sub-4.5-second pass by Larry Dixon in 1999.
Today, the track is still fast, and the weekend of April 21-23, 2017, was a hotbed of Chevy horsepower with the Bowtie fans being treated to a plethora of the coolest Chevys in drag racing. Everything from nitro-burning Funny Cars (from the JFR camp), to the wildest Pro Mods and wheelstanding Super Stocks was on hand. Fans of the late-model Camaro witnessed a rather thick field of COPO Camaros running in Stock and Super Stock classes.
Yep, the city of Baytown was going full throttle with Chevy muscle, and since everything is bigger in Texas, we’ve put together this this huge image gallery by photographer Ron Lewis featuring highlights of the baddest NHRA Chevy drag cars.
