Generally, by the seventh time around in most any event the dust settles and expectations can lean on the conservative side. Not so with Holley’s insanely successful LS Fest. According to company reps, the 2016 version held in Bowling Green, Kentucky, saw double-digit growth at the gate, and spots for those vying for the Grand Champion portion of the competition sold out earlier than ever.
New this year was the addition of an additional autocross track set up at the NCM Motorsports Park in the massive pit area. This did two things: split the competitors into two groups, which enabled the competitors more track time. While one group was at the traditional autocross course at Beech Bend Raceway, the other group was having a go at the course set up at the NCM. Also, the NCM course featured a larger layout so competitors could get more speed and let those healthy LS engines out of their cages.
With three days of fierce competition starting on Friday, by Sunday afternoon hundreds of autocross laps and drag racing runs were in the books. It was a true test of man and machine to see which one lasted the longest.
The event also featured some of the best drag racing Beech Bend offers and included the largest field of late-model COPO Camaros ever. Other classes included Late-Model Heads-Up, Street King, Chevrolet Performance Stock, Drag Radial, Real Street, Rumble (Index), and True Street. There was also a Dyno Challenge, Show-N-Shine, Countryside Cruise, 3S Challenge, Drifting, Road Course Rally, and a huge manufactures midway for those looking to upgrade their ride with the best performance products on the market.
By Sunday afternoon the Grand Champion points from both autocross tracks, the drag strip, and the 3S Challenge were tallied up to determine who would be crowned the 2016 Holley LS Fest Grand Champion. To the surprise of many, Mike DuSold, in his twin-turbo-powered 1967 Camaro, earned enough points to be the 2016 Holley LS Fest Grand Champion. Besides a big-ass trophy, he also got an invite to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.
