If you’re a college basketball fan, March is a month of “madness.” But far crazier than any collegiate rivalry, is what goes on at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. every March. It is on these hallowed grounds where a group of the most diehard nostalgia drag racers gather to bring visions of nitro-burning, flame spewing glory to life.
It was in 1959 that the first March Meet was held, advertised as an East-meets-West outlaw race. It was an immediate hit, but when the NHRA temporarily outlawed nitromethane, the popularity of the March Meet was even further bolstered as one of the premier fuel races of the year.
This year was no exception. Racers and fans alike were rewarded with a spectacular display of all manner of nitro- and alcohol-burning funny cars, dragsters, and altered’s at the 2016 Good Vibrations Motorsports March Meet.
