If you’ve ever admired the breathtaking lines of a concept vehicle and wondered what it’s like to actually drive, you’re in luck. The Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT, one of two concepts unveiled by Chevy at the L.A. auto show, will be available for download as part of the Vision Gran Turismo program for owners of the Gran Turismo 6 video game.

The concept, designed with input and inspiration from Jim Hall and the innovative Chaparral race cars he partnered with Chevy to build in the ‘60s, has a composite monocoque chassis with active aerodynamics, a futuristic, 671-kW laser-beam propulsion system and a 900-hp, air-powered thrust generator. In the virtual world, the car is capable of hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just 1.5 seconds on its way to a 240-mph top speed.

The driving position is anything but conventional, with the driver laying face down inside the car, limbs stretched towards the four wheels. The car’s active aerodynamics can be tweaked by the driver and Chevy says the car is almost more like a wing-suit on wheels than a car. Instrumentation is projected on the driver’s helmet visor, minimizing the vehicle’s mass.

Would-be Chaparral 2X VGT drivers can download the concept car through Gran Turismo 6 this holiday season.
