For the last thirty-three years (and as long as your author has been sucking air), owners of Buicks in every form have taken over Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Initially started in the early 1980s as an event for owners of the classic GS Buicks from the original musclecar era (hence the name), the show quickly evolved into a mecca of Turbo Regals in a very quick order. Overtime, the event has continued to grow to cater to all things Buick; including the supercharged 3800 Series II cars, the 4-cylinder turbocharged Buicks of today, like the Regal and Verano, and even the Turbo Trans Am of 1989.
Every year, there's a huge car show, a special presentation of something Buick-related to encounter, a "pre-game" cruise, and naturally, drag racing. The event spans a total of four days, and we've been covering the event religiously for the last fifteen years or so. And 2013 was no different. Unfortunately, the Qualifying and Eliminations drag racing rounds was a bust, because on Saturday a steady trickle of rain kept the dragstrip wet, and the cars off of the track. The only runs that were collected happened on Friday afternoon and on Sunday, but no awards were given and there aren't any "official" race results.
However, the car show persevered and some of the most beautiful Buicks in the country were on display throughout the weekend. For those of you who enjoy the show n' shine scene just as much as the tire smoking action, the results of the late-model car show contingent have been included in the sidebar. Whether you prefer classic Buicks like Riveiras and Skylark Gran Sports of the ‘60s, the boosted Regals of the ‘80s, or the turbocharged 4-bangers of the 21st Century, the GS Nats has you covered in the show arena!
So despite the rain, event attendees still had fun, mingled, and got to play with their cars for no other reason than for their love of Buicks. The 2014 dates have already been announced, and you can partake in the event with your Buick this year, at Beech Bend Raceway on October 15-18th – you can bet we'll be there!
