There was a time not too long ago when we all thought racing on Pomona’s legendary surface was only a distant memory for average Joes like us. But for the past two years, the NMCA, in conjunction with the NHRA and JE Pistons, has been able to unleash a big event for sportsman and heads-up drag racers that don’t have the cash flow and/or desire to race at the NHRA level. Finally, the West Coast hosts a big muscle car event and luckily, it’s growing.

We were on the Pomona premises for the JE Pistons NMCA West Coast Shootout Presented by Lucas Oil last May and captured some of the coolest Chevys in contention. While the NMCA hosts all brands, there are quite a few crafty Chevy drivers to come out on top at this event. And, like last year, class winners could pick up the NHRA’s most prestigious award: the “Wally.”

525ci Procharged Big Block 2/19

In Garret Turbo Pro Street, Mike Bowman laid down a wicked 5.97 in testing, the quickest pass of the event, but Bowman’s Chevelle was taken out in the finals and settled for second place. Another notable run came from the Idaho resident and skilled drag radial racer Kevin Young, who managed to take out James Lawrence in the semis before taking down Artis Houston’s Nova in the final round. In the Outlaw 8.5 class, a few badass Chevys ruled the competition, but it was Ryan “Toaster” Jones who climbed to the top of the heap after taking down the supercharged Camaro of DJ Reid in the final with his turbocharged Chevy II. In the index classes, Nova driver Josh Edwards was able to win in the final, taking home the coveted NHRA “Wally” trophy, while Tom Drake won in Bracket 1 with his green hardtop Nova, and Randy Chen won Bracket 2 with his ’68 Chevelle. In the TREMEC True Street class, a Mustang, unfortunately, got the best average (8.80), but the turbocharged and nitrous’d Vette of Ed Crowe got second with a 9.78 average, followed by September’s feature car, the Nova of Don Geis, who won the 10-second class with a 10.06 average.

Chevy Nova Ss Rapp 3/19

Engine builder Mark Rapp entered his wheelstanding Nova in a couple classes this year, Open Comp and Nostalgia Street Car. He got past the first, second and third rounds in NSC, and made it to the quarterfinals of Open Comp before losing to a holeshot dealt by Mike Nordahl’s Chevy.

Ls Powered Biscayne 7/19

There were lots of cool cars in the car show at Pomona. This tastefully done LS-powered Biscayne grabbed our attention immediately. We’d like to see more done like this.

Chevy Nova Don Geis 11/19

Does this look like the launch of a 9-second ride to you?

9 Second Ride Don Geis 12/19

The 9.99 flashed on the scoreboard right after this launch from Don Geis’ Nova. We suspect this thing can go a whole lot quicker, but Geis dials it back in order to run consistent enough to get the 10-second True Street title. It worked for Geis this time, as he was able to average 10.06 to get the T/S class victory.

1966 Chevy Chevelle Steve 16/19

In the TT5 (True 10.5-inch tire class), we loved watching Steve Kuhl’s ’66 Chevelle make passes. Under the hood is a wicked 548 on nitrous oxide that granted him a 7.84 in qualifying, but slowed during eliminations and was taken down in round two.
