Over 70 participants took part in the Optima Faceoff at Road America returned to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, last weekend. Keep an eye out, because the event will be featured on television in the fall. The event began with a car show and charity Optima Build-A-Bike event on Friday, June 21st at Johnson Controls Headquarters. The proceeds of the Build-A-Bike event will benefit Milwaukee area Boys & Girls Clubs and the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee.
The Faceoff at Road America is a Regional Qualifier event, which leads up to the Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Pahrump, Nevada, following the SEMA show in early November.
Saturday, the Faceoff participants drove over 60 miles through Wisconsin's beautiful Kettle Moraine State Park en route to the Road America facility in the Detroit Speed Road Rally. There, Faceoff enthusiasts watched as A.J. Allmendinger took victory at the NASCAR Nationwide series race.
On Sunday, the 70 Faceoff participants took to the track to put the pedal to the medal. Their cars were pushed to the limits and their driving skills were tested. A 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 driven by Todd Rumpke took the win in the BFGoodrich Hot Lap Challenge and Dennis Prunty's 1981 Pontiac Trans Am took the cake in the Ridetech Street Challenge Autocross segment. A small group of industry professionals judged the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Design Challenge, through which Karl Dunn's 1968 Chevrolet Camaro was recognized for outstanding craftsmanship.
Second and third place were also owned by Camaros, with Larry Woo's '69 taking second, and Bob Bertelsen's '71 placing third.
"It was great to be back at Road America this year," said Cam Douglass, director of marketing and product development for Optima Batteries. "The Faceoff participants put up some impressive times, and it was exciting to see such a diverse group of real street-driven vehicles take to one of the most historic tracks in the country."
Tying for Second Place in most overall points were Steve Kepler, owner of a 2013 Nissan GT-R, and Todd Rumpke's Z06. Rumpke showed great skill while piloting the high-powered Vette to the picture-perfect finishes in all three performance driving events at the Faceoff competition.
The participants, who came from all over the country, had the opportunity to show off their vehicle's potential on the famous four-mile, 14-turn road circuit, at the end of which four participants received invitations to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational event, which is to be held after the SEMA show in Pahrump, Nevada. The selection was based not only on their vehicle's performance, but also the spirit and attitude they showed over the course of the weekend. John Kundrat and his 1964 Corvette was one of the chosen along with two GM brethren - Damion Campbell with his 1963 Pontiac Tempest, and Brad Reikkoff and his 1981 Pontiac Trans Am.
