Virginia Is For Super Chevys

Lovers Too, If They Bring Chevys

Tony Kelly Mar 5, 2003 0 Comment(s)

We've commented before about how each Super Chevy Show has a personality of its own, manifesting itself in the predominant model, or size, of Chevy on display. This year's Virginia show gave us the chance to see the Mid-Atlantic region's best street rods, along with some truly fine big cars. We even had a truck out in the race area that was an '01 full-size crew cab, 4x4, with a Whipple supercharger that ran 11.80 e.t.'s. These racers in Virginia obviously know how to motivate 5,000 pounds of truck!

"Big" doesn't begin to describe what awaited us on the dragstrip. We've seen diesel truck drag races before, but the big rigs at Virginia did some of the most spectacular burnouts we've seen, even taking into consideration the Nitro Coupes. When you see black exhaust combined with white-gray tire smoke pouring from the sides and rear of a giant truck, then watch that truck make an 11-second run through the quarter-mile, it's what might be called a sensory experience. Of course, the Nitro Coupes did put on quite a show themselves with Gary Irving taking another final, this time defeating Dan Nickelson. Irving has definitely found the formula for making his '37 Chevy run like a bear.

Mike Fraley of Dumfries, VA, has his '63 Corvette very "racy" looking. It looked good enough to be awarded Best Corvette by Trim Parts and Vette magazine.

We saw Norwood Woodall's (Roanoke, VA) name on several car show entries, and when we finally saw the body and paint man's very own car, this beautiful '37 Ford with Chevy power, we awarded it the Street Rodder Magazine Outstanding Street Rod award.

When we could get the gang out of the trunk (where they sat to entertain friends), we got a shot of Randy Jones' very cool '56 Bel Air from Rocky Mount, NC. Then we gave the car an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car award; that went in the trunk too.

How "straight" do you want your El Camino? There's no hiding anything in the bodywork of Mike Holleman's Moorehead City, NC, '65 El Camino. It took an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car award.

Classic Trucks Magazine's Outstanding Classic Truck award went to this First-Generation '55 pickup belonging to Ed and Gail Howell, Hopewell, VA.

Hugh and Shirley Banks of Woodbridge, VA, own this smooth '50 Chevy coupe. It took the SUPER CHEVY Magazine 30th Anniversary Award.

Installing a functional spotlight on a '72 Chevelle was an involved process. Jeff Smith's bright-yellow Malibu from Eden, NC, sports one, along with an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car award.

They made Fords in 1950, and even some people who now only drive Chevys might have had one back then. Barry Wilson's Chevy-powered '50 coupe from Dublin, VA, tugged at our memory, and it took Custom Rodder Magazine's Outstanding Custom Rod award.

The Bullard family brought this exceptional '67 Pro Street Camaro to the show from Quinton, VA. It earned them an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car award.
