Georgia Stays on our Mind
Record-Setting Atlanta Super Chevy Show Clouded by Tragedy
February, 2009
By Tony Kelly
Saturday, May 31, dawned bright and shiny--another glorious day in the South. Record numbers of cars were in the show area and in the race pits. Thousands of fans poured in to admire the gleaming machines. When it was time for the Pro Show, the crowd lining the drag strip was "standing room only." Nitro Coupes were impressive with wild burnouts and great runs. Then, we watched as Jerry Gannon's Jet Funny Car veered left across the track, missing competitor Al Hanna, and crashed heavily into the wall. The car erupted into flames and careened upside-down back into the right lane, striking that wall. Gannon, one of the most well-liked and talented drivers anywhere, was taken by helicopter to the Grady Hospital in Atlanta (the Atlanta Super Chevy Show is actually in Commerce, Georgia, approximately 75 miles from Atlanta) where he died early Sunday morning. When people come to Super Chevy Shows, they recognize there is almost a family atmosphere present. The people who work to put on the event and those who enter cars to race or show become good friends over a season or more. For each and every person at Atlanta, there was genuine shock. Many people came to the Super Chevy Show staff expressing their regrets and understanding if the event were to be concluded immediately. Rather than shut down Saturday, the difficult decision was made to attempt something normal in the face of this extraordinary occurrence. Over the rest of Saturday and until the early conclusion of the show on Sunday afternoon, there was comfort from being in the company of so many who genuinely cared about each other. Super Chevy Show coverage isn't supposed to be somber. We look forward to seeing great cars and great people and having fun. We will again, beginning with the very next show in Bristol. Every once in a while, though, we are reminded that we aren't in a vacuum and that Super Chevy Shows live in the real world--all the more reason to enjoy being at the show when we can. 2002 ATLANTA SUPER CHEVY SHOW VENDOR'S LIST AAAA Toy Advantage Tools Ausley's Chevelle Parts, Inc. You have to get the panels... You have to get the panels very straight to risk painting a show car black. Simon Duffey of Rossville, GA, did just that with his '66 Malibu and it earned an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car award. | Nicky Reynolds' '34 Master... Nicky Reynolds' '34 Master Coupe had tons of custom work done. It was awarded the Early Chevrolet '35 & Earlier-Modified class win. | Bob Hall retired the "Paddy... Bob Hall retired the "Paddy Wagon" wheelstander at the end of last season. He's still doing quarter-mile two-wheel runs, though, but now it's in his new AstroVan Airborne Express. Race fans love it. | What a great '39! Debbie Daniels... What a great '39! Debbie Daniels from Enka, NC, earned the Kimberly-Clark Scott-sponsored Best Early Chevrolet award for this beautifully done early model. | Big Impala SSs are popular...
